Why do you want to start a business?
Ask yourself that question and most likely one of the main points in your answer relates to making more money. That is a good answer. That’s what a business does, it makes money.
Where do you fit in your business?
Are you going to be an employee in your business, someone who makes sure that the business runs well and makes lots of profit?
Are you going to work hard, lots of hours and put everything in you can to make it all happen?
That’s what I hear from most of my clients. No only do they hold their business above themselves, but they are even proud of it. They don’t differentiate between themselves and their business.
There are 2 things wrong with this:
- You are a liability for your business
- The business becomes a liability for you
You need to see your business like a job as an employee in another company. You give your best and the business pays you accordingly. If you would leave, the business would replace you with someone else. If the business does not give you what you think your work is worth, you find another business.
This might sound harsh for some, but your business is not your child. It is a tool for you to achieve your goals. The main aim must be to become financially independent, from your business and anyone else.
To become financially independent means you need to get out of your business as much as you can to build up your fortune. If done right you and your business will profit from that process. Lets face it, if you are not good at what you do, the business should fire you and replace you with someone else. If you are good, the business will make a lot of money and will be able to pay you accordingly.
If you are like me a great starter but pretty bad in finishing things, you will be an amazing asset to start your company up, but you will need to replace yourself with someone else very good at running things once they are up. Now you can look at new opportunities to start another business.
If you are a great manager but not very good at getting things off the ground, find someone who is, partner-up and get it all rolling. Now you do what you do best and enjoy most.
Once you understand that you are not your business, this process becomes very easy.
